October 17th 2019 saw London welcome PMO professionals from 25 countries, as Future PMO opened its doors for the third year running and delivered the most successful PMO-specific event seen so far in the UK.
A packed programme of keynote speakers, practical seminars, PMO clinics and live technology demos was delivered to an audience of 350 delegates, all keen to explore what the future holds for their own PMOs.
The conference was described by delegates as “a must to keep up to date with the latest ideas in the PMO world” (STFC), “excellent and engaging” (National Grid) and “brilliant and well-planned” (Severn Trent).
Future PMO was created in 2017 by Wellingtone, a leading international PPM consultancy and Microsoft Gold Partner, known for its extensive PMO expertise. The event, sponsored by Microsoft, is renowned in the sector for delivering a high wow factor at a low price, with a strictly “no sales” approach that adds value to the delegate experience.
“Future PMO is a genuinely safe space for PMO professionals,” said Emma-Ruth Arnaz-Pemberton, Wellingtone’s Director of Consulting Services and lead organiser of the event. “We don’t do it for profit, we do it to bring PMO people together to share their experiences and ideas. Our aim is to inspire people to go back to their PMOs and do something amazing – and I feel we have achieved that and more this year.”
Leading the Way in PMO Learning and Debate
Delegates were delighted to hear from a collection of distinguished PMO practitioners, academics and technology experts in a programme designed to challenge, stimulate and promote advanced PMO thinking.
Steve Leybourne (Boston University), explored cutting-edge concepts of Bricolage and Improvisation in the contemporary PMO during his opening keynote.
Methodology innovations were tackled by Henrik Sonnenberg (Implement Consulting Group), who is introducing Half Double Agile to the UK, whilst Andy Murray (RSM UK) discussed the Five Generation Workplace approach to PMO maturity using P3M3.
Speakers also addressed the role of the PMO in realising a sustainable society (Gilbert Silvius, LOI University of Applied Sciences), PMO evolution (Jo Dourou, Financial Times) and the importance of people in the PMO (James McMillan, Audeo Fortis). Other speakers of note included Ben Brownlee (BBC), Ellen Jarrett (Ella’s Kitchen) and Steve Butler (Dyson).
The day closed with a fascinating keynote from polar explorer Alan Chambers MBE, who shared lessons learned in leadership from his unique experience of navigating the world’s most challenging natural environment.
Technology was hot on the agenda too, with dedicated sessions showcasing the future Microsoft PPM roadmap encompassing Work Management and Business Intelligence solutions within Office 365.
Future PMO was also the place to be for the latest teaser news on Microsoft Project for the Web, a new lightweight project management solution.
Baz Khinda, Commercial Director at Wellingtone, headed up the technology stream and spoke of his excitement at the announcement of Microsoft’s new offering. “Work takes place in every organisation at every level, whether you’re managing an entire project portfolio or discrete campaigns,” he said. “We’re hugely excited about the forthcoming launch of Project for the Web, which will meet the needs of professionals who still manage projects but require a lighter solution that enables them to pull together their campaigns and plans and manage them more effectively.”
Announcing the 2019 PMO Global Award Winners
For the second year running, the PMO Global Alliance chose FuturePMO as the event to announce the winners of the prestigious PMO Global Awards. Americo Pinto, Chair of the PMO Global Alliance, was on hand to present the accolades, which reflect the diversity and engagement of PMOs across Africa, The Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe. All regional winners attended to collect their regional trophies, with the overall winner announced as Banco Bradesco.
Wowing Delegates with a Fast, Fun and Friendly Event
Future PMO is now well-known for its annual themes which are designed to transport delegates to different worlds and give them an insight into the hero that is their PMO. 2019 saw doors open to a stunning 007 theme, complete with iconic cars and interactive movie props that gave delegates a “license to PMO”.
At the close of play, Wellingtone’s Managing Director, Vince Hines, revealed the 2020 theme to be superheroes. He commented that “Future PMO has been a huge success and an opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge from each other’s real-world experience in the PMO arena. We’re excited about the superhero theme, which will bring fun and fantasy to an environment that’s tailored to the challenges and opportunities PMO professionals face tomorrow, as well as today.”
Early bird tickets are now available for Future PMO 2020, which takes place on the 1st October 2020 in London. Early bookings will yield significant benefits, including discounted rates and the opportunity to add Wellingtone’s APM Accredited PMO Practitioner Course into the package.
